This laboratory is one of the laboratories under the governance of the Laboratory of Food Safety and Food Integrity (FOSFI), Institute of Tropical Agriculture and Food Safety (ITAFoS). This laboratory is located in the Central Laboratory (near the School of Graduate Studies), ITAFoS, UPM. The laboratory is managed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Khaizura Mahmud @Ab.Rashid as Head of Laboratory and assisted by Dr. Nik Iskandar Putra Samsudin.
Here, among the primary researches being conducted include the morphological identification and in vitro propagation of relevant mycotoxigenic fungi such as Aspergillus, Fusarium and Penicillium, ecophysiological studies (impact of climate change on fungal growth and mycotoxin production), antagonistic studies (biological control of mycotoxigenic fungi), qualitative determination of mycotoxigenic potentials (UV screening) and quantitative determination of the mycotoxins (HPLC) from food and feed samples. The laboratory also places several ITAFoS post-graduate candidates and is occasionally used as workshop/training centre on Food Mycology to participants from inside and outside of UPM. The researches being conducted here ultimately contribute to food safety and food security assurance.
