LC-MS/MS Method for Multi-Mycotoxin Analysis in Food and Feed Workshop

August 1, 2018, Serdang - A LCMS-MS workshop was organized by the Laboratory of Food Safety and Food Integrity (FOSFI), Institute of Tropical Agriculture and Food Security (ITAFoS) at Faculty of Food Science and Technology, UPM for three days (1 to 3 August). The workshop was attended by 11 participants comprising lecturers and graduate students. Dr. Franz Berthiller from the University of Natural Resource and Life Sciences, Vienna, Austria, has been invited as the trainer for this workshop.

The scope of this workshop focuses on the importance of analyzing mycotoxins in food and feedstuffs using a method called Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS / MS). This LCMS method is very effective and good in its ability to analyze mycotoxins as it is more specific and sensitive.  It is also able to identify multiple mycotoxins simultaneously rather than conventional methods that only detect individual toxins individually and involve the use of high costs in terms of equipment, time and trained personnel.

Participants were exposed to the theory and technique of analysis using this LCMS technique in lecture sessions and understood them in more practical hands-on sessions. Based on the participants' feedback at the end of the workshop, the objectives of the workshop were achieved. Participants were able to understand the basic use of the LCMS method, preparation of samples analysis, interpretation of the information obtained and ways to address any problems arising during the analysis using LCMS.
