Public Lecture 2018: Modern Analytical Tools to Tackle an Old Problem: Mycotoxins in Food and Feed

July 30, 2018, Serdang – A public lecture entitled ‘Modern Analytical Tools to Tackle an Old Problem: Mycotoxins in Food and Feed’ has been held on 30th July 2018 at Lecture Room FOOD 5, Faculty of Food Science and Technology, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). This programme was organised by Laboratory of Food Safety and Food Integrity (FOSFI), Institute of Tropical Agriculture and Food Security (ITAFoS), UPM and co-organised by Faculty of Food Science and Technology, UPM. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Franz Berthiller from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, Austria (BOKU) has been the invited speaker. He is an expert on liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry and his main research interests are the detection of novel fungal metabolites as well as the determination of mycotoxins. Dr. Franz has shared his vast experience and knowledge in mycotoxins and their deleterious effects include immune suppression, estrogenicity, nephrotoxicity, hepatotoxicity and cancerogenicity. He has emphasized that ever since the discovery of aflatoxins in 1960, analytical methods to determine their occurrence in food and feed have evolved and liquid chromatography coupled to (tandem) mass spectrometry (LCMS) have become state-of-the art in the detection and quantification of these food contaminants. This lecture has highlighted recent developments in LCMS methods to determine mycotoxins.
